review 1: Hypothermia was a major disappointment to me, especially after thoroughly enjoying several other books by Indridason. The writing (which I realize is a translation) was very pedestrian and the ending wasn't satisfying in the least to me. The procedures followed by Erlendur were definitely not by the book and that, to me, is what bothers me so much about the ending. I don't want to spoil it for others, but if you're in law enforcement, don't you investigate, collect evidence, make an arrest, and then let the wheels of justice turn? The secondary cases of missing persons were a little better handled and it seemed that solid thinking produced a relatively satisfying result.My biggest problem with Hypothermia was that nothing happens after the initial incident for the entire f... moreirst half of the book. The pace is so slow and the vibe so downbeat that I nearly gave up, but I hung in there and it became marginally better. If I had the chance to do it over, though, I'd pass. If you're new to Indridason, my recommendation would be to start elsewhere.
review 2: I have now read all this Icelandic author's work... they're very good psychological crime novels. Bags of bleak atmosphere and nice details of the weird stuff they eat there ... you don't call for a late-night kebab on the way home - it's half-a-sheep's head for Erlander!This novel was particularly full of heavy-heart themes - from suicides and untraced bodies of missing kids to Erlander's own dysfunctional family relationships. Good, if you like this kind of thing (I do) less
