review 1: I don't read much YA of this type nor do I have teenagers. I was taken about by the amount of frank language and themes (sex, drugs, bullying), but I also know that is a reality for many teens and having books addressing real issues is good. Wrapped up in all of that is a girl dealing with the death of her closest friend, a mother who abandoned her, and a caring dad who has a hard time communicating. Over the course of the book, their relationship develops and grows in a way that anchors Vera and helps both of them deal with past and present difficulties. It helps that Vera is and has always been strong and responsible. review 2: I feel about this the same way I felt after Looking for Alaska. I am emotionally drained but I feel cleansed. Is that weird. Because ... moreif it is I am perfectly okay with that. Vera Dietz is one of those characters that makes me want to be a better person. I honestly don't know how this book is not read and praised everyone because it has so many themes that can be taken away from it and I am just happy that I read it and sad that I have to take it back to my school library on Monday. (It will be returned slightly tear stained which I feel bad about) less
