review 1: This was a cute and quick read that delivered on all things supernatural. There were wizards, shapeshifters, brownies, vampires, and just about any other paranormal you can imagine. The world was silly and fun and had me immediately diving into the next book immediately after the last page of this one!Brandee is a human bar waitress at "Boston Uncommon", a paranormal bar (in which the human staff is unaware of the paranormals). She's been dumped a few dozen times, but this one (via text message) sends her in a bit of a tailspin. Nick is a werewolf who has been a strictly one night type of guy in the hopes that he'd be free when he discovers his true mate. He's also changing careers from cop to paranormal PI to take on his first case -- saving Brandee's fire mage cousi... moren from kidnappers. Brandee is a bit of a stubborn woman and instead of getting Nick's permission to tag along on the investigation, she ends up following him and learning more than she bargained for. Nick, also, learned more than he anticipated -- namely that Brandee is his true mate. After some misunderstandings, arguments, and paranormal interventions in the form of a fortune teller, we get some serious HEA. If you're looking for a very light and fun read, this trilogy looks like what you need.
review 2: It's not a bad book, but it's not a good book either. The problem with this book in my opinion,is that the story line is actually not bad, but it's just not executed very well. At all.Minor spoilers ahead, consider yourself warned. The book holds no sense of time. It's like only a few days have passed, when suddenly Brandee says "We started dating in September and it's not even Halloween yet." I was dumbfounded. That much time passed? How? When? Why? What? O.OAnd precisely because there is no proper sense of time, the love feels unnaturally rushed. Where did the days go we didn't read about? Surely there were other dates, other issues, other events.. other well, anything. At one point Brandee asks Nick what he likes about her and the things he talks about are things we haven't ever read about. It's like "how do you know this, when we don't even know this". If the author wished to avoid confusion, why not say things we read about? There are many options to choose from.I could continue to explain about other flaws in the execution of writing this book. But the main flaw in my opinion is the sense of time.Naturally, there are also small issues. Such as Brandee's tendency to replace "god" in "oh my god" with something which is supposedly random but almost always has to do with the situation going on ("pickled herring" excluded). It's not funny. It's weird. "Oh my Pepto" was particularly confusing because I didn't know this medicine. One more question..Why would you create a vampire (who also happens to be a witch) who is afraid of the dark but coincidentally has this blood laced wine with a secret ingredient that lets her be awake in the day? Why would you do that? less
