review 1: This novel is broken into three major parts that are interconnected by means of a single object, a necklace that originated in Hungary and ended up on the Hungarian Gold Train during WWII. A short introduction-type portion of the novel finds us witnessing one of the last interactions between a grandfather and his beloved granddaughter. Then we backtrack to the the period post-WWII when the grandfather was younger and stationed in Salzburg. After that, we find ourselves in the present, following the granddaughter who travels far to learn about the origin of the object left to her by her grandfather who so desperately wanted it returned to its owner. Finally, we travel to pre-WWII Hungary where we learn about the circumstances surrounding the necklace. There is a lot of back... more and forth between time periods, and I found myself wishing that the book had just been about the last part because that was the portion that held my attention best.
review 2: I really wanted to rate this higher because there were pieces of it that I loved -- it was almost a great book. I loved the post-war storyline. I was so invested in that story and the characters. It was heartbreaking and beautiful and made me think about so many pieces of war and war aftermath that are never given much thought...and then it was just over. The pre and post stories just didn't have the same impact and it all felt disjointed. I kept thinking that the stories would somehow link with some thread, but they didn't. Each ended abruptly. I finished this book feeling like it was lacking some resolution. less

Interesting history, part one and two good. Part about Nina should have been a separate book.

Interesting structure for meshing three stories. Very well done.

Wonderful book. Very ambitious in sweep but she handles it well.
