review 1: I was delighted that the exmoor setting, and even some of the characters from BLACKLANDS reappeared in Darkside. The book did keep me reading , and Bauer's way with words is accomplished, but towards the end I really began to feel the plot had veered in a very unconvincing direction. Jonas was a character who lacked substance and authenticity for me, and Marvel was just too much the stereotypical bumbling policeman...but what irritated me the most was the abrupt detour into the realm of psychological disorder and Greek tragedy. A bit like Agatha Christie meets Minette Walters ...and just too many dead bodies!
review 2: Belinda Bauer was recommended by Goodreads as similar to Tana French. Love Tana French's characters, plot twists, and wonderful descriptive ph... morerases. I so appreciate the recommendation as after reading her novels, I love Belinda Bauer as well. Ordered Darkside when I was about a third of the way through Badlands and just ordered Finders Keepers and Rubbernecks today after completing Darkside. Wish I had ordered sooner so I could have simply picked up the next one. Enjoyed Darkside even more than Badlands probably because I am disconcerted by child victims, but must be less upset by the murder of the terminal and infirm. Not sure what that says about me, but I did enjoy this book. In a few words Bauer can describe a situation, an individual, or a place completely. I found myself rereading a sentence or phrase and being and marveling at how fully I understand and can visualize what she is saying. Of course I enjoyed the plot twists and how this book intersects with Badlands. This book is definitely "a swimmer." less
