review 1: Bauer’s third book featuring the villages surrounding Exmoor. Another very good and enjoyable psychological whodunit. Children are disappearing from various spots around the countryside and notes are being left that say “You Don’t Love Her” or Him or Them, as the case may be. Bauer weaves her way through this story, offering different perspectives on the characters as the story goes along. So some, such as D.I. Reynolds from the Serious Crime Squad, who initially appears rather pompous and overly concerned with the appearance of his newly transplanted hairline, ends up being a fairly sympathetic character. And so it goes with a number of individuals in the book. And while we can abhor the methods of the eventual perpetrator, Bauer lays out their story such that we ... morecan empathize with them as well. A good ending ending featuring Jonas Holly, the local village constable, who was prominently featured in Darkside. This is one series where it is best to read the books in order, starting with Blacklands (winner of the Gold Dagger Award for best crime novel in 2010) and then Darkside. In fact, it would be essential to at least read Darkside, since there are a lot of references in this book to the events that took place in that one. A highly recommended series by an excellent writer.
review 2: I enjoyed this book as simply an entertaining and well constructed story. It had me hooked and l took every opportunity to pick it up and continue my involvement. I like the range of characters the author has created and the Exmoor setting adds real atmosphere. This story further builds characters introduced in the author's prior books and I suspect that without having read those beforehand, it may have been harder to work out some of the motivations and history the characters brought into this story. Some reviewers have criticised the plot of children disappearing as inconceivable, but in my opinion an entertaining crime thriller should have an inventive story and this might mean its inconceivable in some respects. (I suspect also that most real crime is pretty routine and wouldn't make such a good story). I don't rate crime fiction as one of my favourite genres, but I think I'll follow this author, with interest. She seems to find a very different and entertaining angle to write about. I've now read all of her four books currently in market and look forward to more. less

Chilling, terrifying and unputdownable. Can't wait for Belinda Bauer's next novel.
