review 1: Fourth in this charming series about a biracial London constable who is advancing in his Wizarding career but dealing with the same predictable institutional bureaucracy in a snarky British fashion that has just the right level of wit to make me his friend and supporter through every book to come (oh this I pledge). I liked the 20th century architecture theme in this one, with a subplot about what it's like to live in a highrise project slated for demolition. An added bonus was more German than I expected (1). This book takes an unexpected turn near the end of the installment that makes me incredibly impatient for the next book to come out to find out what happens next. Oksy Ben, you succeeded, I'm addicted to PC Grant and his motley cast of supporting characters. Loo... moreking forward to the rural romp to come in the next volume.
review 2: If you haven't read Rivers of London or Midnight Riot the first in the PC Grant series. Do try. Don't be put off by Harry Potter comparison which is not fair to either author. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman has resonance as does Kraken by China Mieville and Matthew Swift novels by Kate Griffin. But this is a bildungsroman of a different sort. If you have a love/hate relationship with a city, the detail and inhabitants will enthral. if you are planning to visit London the series could act as a real tour guide. For those who have read the previous titles you are very likely as fascinated as I am. You wish the books were bigger and hope the author is HARD at work producing more. This could so easily be a TV mini -series. less

Toss up between three and four stats. Accomplished, great ending, just missing some sparkle.
