review 1: Fast paced following the life of PC Grant working his patch in Soho. It gives a vibe that it could be set in the 40s With it's dark clubs and Jazz musicians and where the police have a pint while working, all in the line of duty of course. Yet it's very present day with it's iPods and liberal matter of factness of gay characters and women asserting their sexuality. Oh and let's not forget to mention He's learning magic. Throw in an unusual serial killer who targets jazz musicians who's means of murder is magic not brutality and other characters such as a tiger boy and jazz vampires.Yes this was an interesting read and is happily read another book. Definitely a good easy read.
review 2: [I did not have book 2 on hand when I was plowing through the earlier part
... mores of the series. Catching up with the backlog after book 5 (which was so good! how come this series keeps getting better? shouldn't the opposite happen?)]Random observation that has little to do with this book in particular: it took me till the most Nightingale-centric novel of the series (and, since I'm reading out of order, this is actually the 5th one that I read!) to realize just how innovative the casting is. One of the protagonists is a white posh English gentleman with a prerequisite cane, a prerequisite tragic past, and a penchant for magic. One of the protagonists is a mixed-race young man from a working class background, with nothing but a wicked sense of humour to his name (at the beginning of the series, at any rate). In most stories, the former would be in the forefront, while the latter would be on the support cast, probably as comic relief. Yes, it took me till the 5th book to realize that, in most cases, the awesomeness that is Peter Grant would not have been the protagonist. I like Nightingale a lot (he can fireball Tigers, apparently - heeee!); yet the series would have been more cliched with him as the narrator. less
