review 1: When I read this it was titled Rivers of London, but coming to Goodreads, I discover that's the title of the graphic novel. Confusing! However; this book under any title is just wonderful. Ignore the marketing bylines - Rivers/Midnight is rather more Harry Dresden than Harry Potter, but it's also it's own man. I enjoyed it a great deal & look forward to making my way through the rest of the series. Good job, Aaronovitch.
review 2: Four stars. four-and-a-half, even. It's very well written, well voiced, compelling and engaging, and the setting is vivid and alive - without being endlessly described ad nauseum. ... moreelopment/progression. The style of writing is witty (and usually subtle about it, typical deadpan british humour). It has lots of nerdy references woven elegantly in, but not in that obnoxious sort of way, as if the author's trying to prove just how smart he or she is.I'd give it five stars but for one thing - it's not terribly innovative. It's well told, it's entertaining, it's sharp and witty - but it's still somewhat 'by-the-numbers.'Overall I'd characterize it as Harry Potter meets Harry Dresden's british cousin. less
