review 1: More like 3.5 stars. Maybe it's because it took me a little while to read this, but I struggled to keep track of the plot in this book, which, admittedly, is not the most coherent to begin with. Aaronovitch's strength is in character, particularly Peter Grant, his protagonist, who is witty and snarky and charming and odd. Also his grounding of the story in modern London, which is amazingly specific and vivid. I think I need a break for awhile before I read any more in the series, but I enjoyed this - even if I felt like sometimes it was about 2 seconds from flying off the rails.
review 2: This is the second book in Aaronovitch's Peter Grant series. I felt like he was hitting his stride here. I liked seeing more of Grant's parents, and his ongoing relationships
... morewith his mentor, his best friend from the police academy Leslie (injured in the last book) and Stephanopoulos, the lesbian officer whom Aaronovitch made us like in the previous volume. I found the plot both tighter and easier to follow in this one and the magic made more sense to me. I can't wait to read the next two books in the series. less

More well done than the first. Definitely establishing a more long term plot arc.
