review 1: What a delightful book!! At first I thought that I wasn't in the mood for this type of book--scout lost in the woods meeting talking animals and dastardly villains--but I'm so glad I stuck with it. How it turns out makes me so happy. Love the imagination of Bill Willingham. Actually, I couldn't help but realize that thinking outside the simple reality of what we see is a help to grasping the truths we take by faith about our purpose for our time on Earth and what comes next and on and on for our eternities to come.

... moreally Max. His "sleuthing" is too contrived, and takes up too much of the book. The dialogue is bad, especially Max's; no adult talks like that, let alone a child. And it felt really violent for a MG book, with deaths and injuries in graphic detail. less
