review 1: Award-winning South African author Lauren Beukes teams up with Argentinian-Spanish artist Iñaki Miranda to deliver a compelling Rapunzel story steeped in Japanese folklore and mythology. In search of her lost children, Rapunzel reunites with her former kitsune lover in Tokyo. Shenanigans ensue, and blood is spilled in the past and present as we learn what's made Rapunzel who she is today. Great writing and great art, with some chilling moments courtesy of Beukes's J-horror inspirations.
review 2: I enjoyed this arc more than the first one. Mostly because it threw in some Japanese folktales. I know a little about Japanese myths and folktales so recognizing some of the creatures / characters was half the fun. Like I said when I read the first Fairest volume; I'm
... more not that well-versed in Fables--only read the first two volumes of it, so I don't know all the backstory of characters. The idea of Rapunzel eating her hair and then them turning into evil creatures was pretty terrifying. I like the tale. Onwards to the next volume that I won from DC's goodreads giveaways! less
