review 1: It's a very smart well-thought book. What you see in the very first page with the boy in his classroom will appear sometime throughout the story. I don't agree with that it's just a fun book to make little kids giggle. Although it may do that, but that was not the whole purpose of this book. In my opinion, there's a metaphor behind every single character from the mynah bird to the boy in different roles. The illustrations are absolutely phenomenal. But at the end of the day, it's a double faceted book, kids and adults will like it, but in totally different worlds. Although Lane Smith is not the author, but this book has the style of most of Lane Smith's books, childish jokes but with a twist on them!
review 2: 1. Rating: 42. A book review from Children's Litera
... moreture says, "This book is not so much a children's picture book as an adult revenge against the authoritarian teachers of one's childhood. Opening with a boy sitting in a corner of a classroom with a blackboard filled with "I will not's," Bob Shea's text shows the boy playing out fantasies of power. He utters all the cliches from "Big plans" to "Let's get to business" to "Dress for success" as he picks up a mynah bird flunky who helps him take over increasingly important business and political posts, including some command over outer space. Lane Smith's signature sassy and exaggerated collages fill the oversize pages and do much to inject some humor. However, in the end, this is not a very empowering book for those children who march to different drummers or who have been humiliated in school for being divergent. Despite all his loud assertions, the boy on the end page is still stuck in disgrace in the corner. I'm not at all sure that is a message I would like to have young people be left with."3. This book is about a determined, somewhat bossy little guy that has “BIG PLANS! Big plans I say!” The illustrations are very colorful sketch-like drawings and there are many different sizes of fonts on each page. It is a good one for the imagination and I think second and third graders would really enjoy it. less
