review 1: This amazing story takes you back to the Hoover days and the post WW I depression, the days when working for 1 month might have earned you a couple of dollars. Daniel, a WW I vet with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, leaves his family in search of work and to escape from the horrors of his nightmares of horrors past. The reader lives through his hardships, the broken promises of the government and the endless search for food, water, shelter, and safety. For all of us who have had down periods in our lives, this book will make you appreciate what you have.
review 2: I think I got this book as a free deal. It was a much better book than I expected. This book is set during The Great Depression. Daniel is a man who is suffering from PTSD from WWI and has left his
... more family in search of work or at least some perspective on his situation. LaDaisy is the wife he left behind. She has three children to take care of and is torn between wanting Daniel to be home and furious at him for leaving. The book goes back and forth between Daniel's story and LaDaisy's story. I really wanted to dislike Daniel for leaving his wife and three children on their own during such a hard financial time but the author did a good job of conveying how he was feeling which made me have some sympathy for him. I identified more with the story of LaDaisy and enjoyed how much stronger she got by the end of the book. The end of the book was satisfying. I like historical books and this one really brought life to The Great Depression. It made me grateful for being born in this time period. Even though our financial situation in this country hasn't been great the last few years and it is hard to see improvement in sight at least I can be grateful that things aren't the way they were in the 1930's. Today we think we are deprived if we don't have the latest smart phone when people in The Great Depression were fighting to feed their babies. less

Enjoyed the whole story--especially the chapters about the family that was left behind.

Couldn't stomach it after the rape scene. Just didn't have the desire to finish it.
