review 1: Amazing. There is so much in this story about faith, hope, and acceptance. The way Brandon Sanderson crafts trust into his characters, but balances that trust with skepticism, then throws them into situations that challenge them, that create conflict, that force them to either grow strong enough to overcome obstacles, or fail because they are too weak -- it's captivating.I love the *growth* of the characters in this trilogy. In Book 1, Kelsier, the Survivor of Hathsin, begins the journey with a mad plan, a revolutionary idea, a rebellious wish to change the things that are in favor for how he believes things *should* be. He forms a rag-tag crew of *brilliant* people who each excel in the tasks they are chosen for, and as their chosen leader, he outlines the plan, his vision,... more and breaks it down for them into easy-to-digest chunks in order to make an impossibly epic task seem downright doable. The members of his crew believe in him, and more importantly, they believe in his vision. Together, they strive toward the same goal: to overthrow an empire. From Book 1, I was able to draw parallels to real life. Startups in Silicon Valley, for example, operate in much the same way that this patched-together crew of Kelsier's did. You have a leader, a founder, a CEO with a brilliant idea, and you have the members of his crew who begin to work towards that ideal because they *believe* in what he believes, and they feel inspired by his leadership despite the inherent risk of what they are setting out to do. The immediate payoff may not be there for those who work under that leader, but the ultimate reward is what they are striving for. During the journey, the team grows together, bonds together, learns to trust each other and rely on each other. And even in the face of not reaching that ultimate reward, they continue to strive toward that vision anyway because they come to care for each other, for their leader, and for the holistic reasons behind their approach. It was interesting to watch the characters in the Mistborn Trilogy grow, to see them interact with each other in new ways that changed realistically with their shifting circumstances and fortunes. It was heartbreaking to see them fall apart for very real reasons, and to watch them overcome those periods of weakness. Their victories were my victories. Their sorrows, my own. I found myself rooting for them, amazed by them, and gasping in dread for them when terrible things happened to them that I obviously could not prevent. The revelations in this book, the reasons behind why things were, and the answers to puzzles planted within the texts were all skillfully written. There were many times, particularly in Book 3, where all I wanted to do was yell, "NO WAY!" Or, "HOLY SH*T!", and other similarly non-eloquent exclamations. The twists and turns, the surprises -- just, wow.For such a lengthy trilogy, I'm surprised I never bothered skimming pages. Everything felt relevant and interesting. The Mistborn Trilogy is the first I've read of Brandon Sanderson, and it *definitely* won't be my last. With storytelling like this, how could I *not* read more of his brilliant work? Good storytellers do still exist, and Sanderson is one of them.10/10, would recommend, and would DEFINITELY read again.
review 2: I heard a lot of buzz about this series, but it wasn't my favorite. The characters weren't developed very well and the dialogue was a little shallow. The concept and story were interesting enough although I feel like it wasn't fleshed out enough. I'm glad that I read them, but wouldn't read them again. If you're a fantasy fan and have some time, I would say read them, but don't set your expectations too high. less
