review 1: Hefting this thousand-page monstrosity in no way marred my expectations. I have come to understand that reading Sanderson is exactly as Stephen King described writing to be--an excavation--the story is not so much created as it is uncovered, and being true to the story is what makes it great. This many pages demands patience and when the story unfolds layer after layer, it is rather satisfying. All of the world building and character development is overwhelming at first, and even painful. Patience is key. I did not get the deep feeling of satisfaction at the end of the book. I would have been miffed if I had not had the second book already in my possession, but clearly, this is going to take many more books to uncover all that is set before us.
review 2: The Wa
... morey of Kings is one of the most enthralling fantasy books I have ever read. It follows an ensemble of characters ranging from slaves to scholars. Kaladin is one of the three main protagonists in The Way of Kings. He is a slave with incredible skills in combat as well as strategy. Along his journey, you meet a one armed herdazian, a large Unkalaki, and a curious spren named Syl. Secondly, we follow Shallan Davar. A woman of higher class who has come to seek mentorship from the king's scholar sister, Jasnah Kholin, to steal her soulcaster. She, urged by her family, planned to steal the soulcaster to create riches to make up for her dead fathers incredible debts. Shallan and Jasnah expose the readers to incredible philosophy as they try to uncover the dark secrets of the Knights Radiant and the Voidbringers. Finally, Dalinar Kholin, legendary warrior and uncle to the king, fights upon the shattered plains against the barbaric Parshendi. Rather than lust for money and power like the other high princes, Dalinar seeks to unite them to make a unified Alethkar. Dalinar sees visions of the Almighty warning Dalinar of the return of the Voidbringers and urges him to reunite the Alethi. Brandon Sanderson captivated me with the culmination of an incredible plot, a fully thought out world, and incredibly detailed characters. The book took over my imagination. I would imagine Kaladin and the members of Bridge 4 or I would dream of Dalinar rushing into battle. At every moment, I was enjoying the book. I will give this book a 9/10. I am incredibly excited to finish the next book in the series Words of Radiance and I hope that everyone can love this book as much as I do. less
