review 1: The main characters of “When Lightning Strikes” are Gail and Simon. Gail DiMarco is a responsible, determined and kind young woman, who owns her own PR Company. Her most challenging client, Simon O’Neal is a movie star with a bad reputation, too often behaving badly (for his image). When Simon decides to leave her as a client because Gail wants him to clean up his act, he took her clients with him, so now Gail must figure out how to get her clients back and he – because of his bad behavior in the press - must figure out a way to gain custody of his son. After a misunderstanding with one of her employees the only thing they can think of that will help them both is a marriage of convenience (a bit far-fetched, right?). The courts and world will then finally see him as... more a responsible and loyal adult, and a marriage to Hollywood A-lister will help her grow her client list again. But it's not as easy as it seems. They have to convince the world and most importantly her family back in Whiskey Creek. This is my first Brenda Novak read and I’m not totally convinced. On paper, many elements, like the backdrop of Whiskey Creek, the plot of a publicist trying to save her client’s image, are present to make this an interesting romantic story, but the execution lacked depth and originality. It was so repetitive too, which is rather boring. At the same time, once Gail and Simon move to Whiskey Creek there were characters brought in that didn't bring any plus value to the story. So I don’t know why they were there to begin with? What I did learn from this light little book, is that people in the public eye – famous people - have a hard time living their private life, like everyone has a right to.I listened to this via Audible and the narrator Amy Rubinate did a decent job. Well she did her best with the material she was dealt with, I guess.
review 2: The book starts out with Gail, the head/owner of a PR firm, realizing that her company is quickly spiraling down the drain, due to her very public "firing" of one of her clients. A few weeks before, she decided to tell off one of her clients (a very popular, gorgeous male actor - Simon), and then his manager decided to teach her a lesson by convincing her entire clientele that she was bad news, and everyone abandoned her PR company, joining another one. She was suddenly very worried not only about herself, but also her employees. Then she realizes she has to eat crow and apologize to try to get some of her clients back and save her company. Meanwhile, one of her well meaning employees decide another tactic...which puts her in hot water. Suddenly a bad situation just got a whole lot worse! ...So she puts her pride aside and between her and Ian (Simon, the ex client's manager) they come up with a way to save Simon from his ex-wife/and allow him to repair his image enough to get at least visitation rights to his son Ty). Except that idea backfires on her too. This is getting interesting fast.... less

An entertaining if not predictable book. The saving grace was the likable characters.
