review 1: Fun little tale featuring three estranged Avengers learning to trust one another again, with excellent art by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer.I've criticized Brian Michael Bendis in the past for his weak plotting skills, but when given a little five issue book like this, he turns out a tightly constructed, fun adventure story where plot turns share space equally with his usual character work. After a long period of war and distrust (which you don't really need to know the details of to follow this), Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America, three stalwart Avengers, find themselves side by side for the first time in years. As they're shunted off to a fantasy landscape, they work out their distrust all while taking part in a refreshingly old fashioned superhero tale. Bendis's script i... mores helped immeasurably by the extremely talented art team of Alan Davis and Mark Farmer, who provide marvelously lush visuals for the fantasy world where this takes place, making this a fun little diversion from the usual years-long leisurely plots that characterized most of Bendis's work on the Avengers.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. The story started off with the avengers overlooking the fallen city of Asgard and things were tense between Iron Man, Thor and Steve Rodgers. Suddenly these three find themselves on an unexpected journey through the 9 realms. I enjoyed the continuation of a great story arc goon through Marvel during this time but it was the light hearted dialog which sold me. Sometimes superheroes fall somewhere between the ridiculousness of super serious and very cheesy. This seemed like a good mix of natural humor and heavy themes. I have always been a fan of Iron Man and I have an appreciation of Captain America as well for obvious reasons, but Thor always seemed to be a flat character to me. However authors like Bendis and Fraction are beginning to turn my opinion of his role as they explore themes of spirituality which is a subject close to my heart. Given the opportunity to "fix" all the things which had fallen Thor restrains himself realizing,"To use this unholy power for my own ends would make me the same demon a she is"I can appreciate that as sometimes I want enter in to situations as a savior an help to solve people's problems for them. After all I hate to watch people suffer. However there are times when solving people's problems for them only leads to more problems and I am as bad as an enemy in that persons life. The ability to practice self-restraint is a lesson more of us should learn. I haven't read too much from Brian Michael Bendis but if his other work is like this I will certainly give it priority. less
