review 1: I got this because I thought it was going to be like Tank Girl, but I ended up barely being able to get through it. If you belong to generation social justice warrior, you'll probably really like this book. If you don't, I don't expect you'll find too much to like here. I can't believe this series is supposedly being so critically acclaimed. Is the comics industry really becoming that hipsterfied? I have no idea, I try not to pay attention to that kind of stuff. Terrible, shallow writing, detestable characters (the main character is wearing a fedora, that should tell you plenty), hipster motifs. A story about police brutality in fucking Portland Oregon. The artwork is stylish but it's not really impressive either, it's basically ripping off of Richard Linklater's style we ... moresaw in Waking Life, Scanner Darkly. This book exists to market to the tumblr crowd. That should summarize it sufficiently.
review 2: Too-cool-for-school crap that I gradually warmed up to as I realized they were going to follow through on some of the more daring questions raised. This is the exact same book that Bendis keeps writing over and over again, and Maleev deserves some sort of award as the guy with the most talent who's doing the least with it. Call it the Steve Dillon Prize. This book is the product of two lazy masters who are doing a thoroughly professional job of beating a dead horse.I'll keep reading, though, because I want to know how they're going to work Charles Dorner into their world. less
