review 1: I really wanted to like this series because I really, REALLY liked Nocturne City series, but I have to say I'm more than a little disappointed with one. It's just hard to read and I love urban fantasy and read the genre all the time, but this is just - I guess she spends more time time trying to be right in speech patterns and locations because the story is based in London that it seems to detract from the flow of the story. I'm going to try the 2nd to see if it gets any better...
review 2: A gritty Urban Fantasy - my kinda thing (in theory) I was hoping for something to ward off the pangs of missing Stacia Kane's Downside Ghosts series, but although I can see the comparisons,it's not in the same ball park. I really struggled to get through it,(wanted to give u
... morep a few times & kind of wish I had) but did eventually limp over the finishing line. I feel bad saying this, but for me this book was dire (and I did really want to like it - I mean who reads a book they think they will hate anyway?)I think the main issue I had was with the cringeworthy use of British slang - it was completely off - continually used & often in the wrong context. Noone talks like that & it was really really irritating! Even if there had not been this language problem though I wouldn't have enjoyed this book much - the main character Pete (short for Petunia- really!) was the least convincing police inspector ever & Jack was hard to like. The interaction between them consisted mainly of childish strops. The story was fairly predictable. There seem to be lots of postive reviews for this (so maybe it's just me?) But I will be avoiding this authors work in future. less

Pete is haunted by a bad experience from her youth involving magic and death. She's now a detective inspector who deals in death without the magic. Her grown up world collides with the death and magic from her past and she forced to deal with those nightmare, rescue the missing kids and possibly a messed up mage.I really wanted to like this book more than I did. Pete seems to be a kick ass girl with plenty of personality and goodness. She wants to save everyone. Jack is a bad boy with secrets and a tortured past. Elements that sound fab to me......but I just didn't get why Pete wanted to help Jack so bad. He doesn't have a heck of a lot to redeem him, not even charm. I think possibly that the history that the author tried to portray was much more complex and indepth than she got across and thus Pete has this bond with Jack that will not allow her to give up on him. Hey I can only assume that, as this is not what came across in the story.I'm going to give the next installment a go as I'm hoping that Jack will grow on me and I will see something in him that I like and want to succeed.

The debut of a new series from Kittredge, this book is much better than the Nocturne City books. The writing is tighter and more clever, the characters have more complexity, and the plot moves along at a better pace. If you're looking for a good dark and/or urban fantasy, I recommend giving this one a try. This series even improves with book two, 'Demon Bound', and I have high hopes for book three.
