review 1: This Scandinavian mystery was recommended to me based on my Jo Nesbo obsession and Stieg Larson reads. As a result, I was hoping for the female version of these two. Unfortunately, I was disappointed, although overall I did like the book. I enjoyed Patrik and Erica a lot as a couple and I was surprised to learn that this is the first book in a series. However, the writing could have been more concise -- there was too much filler that was designed to provide atmosphere or secondary character development. Additionally, I'm not sold on the idea of the killer(s) -- I think that was too unbelievable. For such a gossip-fueled town, where neighbors look out their windows at the slightest provocation, were they all really that blind?
review 2: I like to read a good... more murder mystery and was interested in checking out this author's work. Having previously read Stig Larrson's "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy, and having loved it, I can't say that this book quite measured up to those books. Some interesting character development but I found a lot of the unfolding plot predictable, well before the actual words were read. Might have to do with the fact that something might have been lost in the translation? less
