review 1: Another of Camilla Lackberg's series featuring Patrik Hedstrom and the characters on his police force. Reading her books in series is the best way to read them, as you build a relationship with the motley crew which people her books. Set in Sweden, Lackberg brings the ascribed characteristics of her countrymen into each novel - non communicative, reserved, humourless by degree as in their worst case - and also everything which lightens the lives of these Northern people. Lackberg is an especial favourite of mine because the twists and turns keep me guessing, even when things get a bit creepy. I don't like creepy much, but the psychological developments provide elements of humanity and compassion.

... moreasy but I lucked out and found The Drowning in our local library, and damn pleased I did. This is another slice of life from her regular character Detective Patrik Hedstrom and again it proves the point that she is one of Sweden's hottest crime writers at the mo. Yes, its dark, and yes its a powerful psychological thriller. The story begins with local writer Christian Thhydell realising his dream with the launch of his first novel The Mermaid. Christian appears to be struck by anguish and doesn't want to go all out to please his publishers in support of it's release. Not only is his book rather out there, but Christian himself is rather odd. Alongside this, local men, aqaintances, if not friends of Christian's, either go missing, or are attacked. Something in their collective past seems to be resurfacing, but Patrik and his team are initially at a loss. Thanks to help from his writer wife Erica, who is about to deliver twins, Patrik finally unravels the mystery. On the way we are lead a merry dance with numerous plot twists and turns. Another great read from Scandanavia. less

Nearly 5 stars, quite good, without the historical interest of The Hidden Child.

Not a huge fan of crime, but this one got me hooked to the last page.
