review 1: I love this series - not as dark as most Scandinavians, probably because of the domestic life. Anyway, an arson attempt on an old house being refurbished leads into a story that stretches back over many years. A family disappears one Easter weekend, leaving only a two-year old behind. She is now an adult and with her husband is attempting to bring life to her old family home. Interspersed with the modern story is the tale of several generations of women; the two strands are eventually brought together - and then there are the teenage boys, now adults, who are also connected to the mysterious disappearance. There's a lot going on here and Lackberg handles it all well. A good mystery, great continuing characters - even the secondary ones will hold your attention - and ... moreof course the ongoing story of Erica and Patrik's family life make this well worth a read.
review 2: This is the eighth book in the series set in the Norwegian town of Fjallbacka and featuring writer Erica Falck and her policeman husband Patrik Hedstrom. I have enjoyed all these books and this was no exception. The setting is interesting and picturesque, and the characters well drawn. A family disappear, leaving behind a two year old girl. The mystery is never solved. After many years the girl and her husband move to the island to renovate the old house. There is an arson attack, and Patrick is called on to investigate. The story quickly becomes more involved, with links to right wing extremists, and questions about what really happened years ago. A compelling mystery, great characters and a wonderful setting. Highly recommended. less
