review 1: A creditable entry in Lackberg's mystery series set in a small community in Sweden, this story interweaves tragedy from the WWII era with murders in the present. As much a rumination on family ties and vengeance as a whodunit, it kept me engaged even though I figured out fairly early on who the guilty party was. There are at least eight viewpoint characters, but I found it fairly easy to keep them straight, and the translation from the Swedish is mostly smooth.
review 2: This was a terrific book! Camilla Lackberg came late to writing, but she's certainly made up for lost time. The Hidden Child weaves back and forth between Sweden during WW II and present time, telling the story of a group of 4 friends and the secrets they've kept for 60 years. Lackberg very
... moreslowly and methodically reveals information that helps the reader figure out some of the basic secrets. But some are truly mystifying and surprising. The characters are well-written with lots of complexity. It was fascinating to learn about Nazi-occupied Norway and the ways that Swedes attempted to help. I highly recommend this book. less
