review 1: This was the first book I've read by this author and I was disappointed. It sounded interesting but it was boring. I liked the hero, but the heroine was boring. The chemistry between Thea and Gabriel was forced and not believable. The mystery plotline dragged on so long-- it kind of felt like the book was going nowhere, then all of a sudden at the author realized there were almost 300 pages already and so they slapped together a resolution just to get the thing to end. The only reason I finished the book is because I had already paid for it. probably won't be reading more from this author, since looking at the reviews this one was overall well liked :/
review 2: Let me start off by saying that I have liked some of Camp's other novels, but not every book clic
... moreks with every reader. This one never clicked for me, and I gave up less than halfway through. I'd give it 2.5 stars if Goodreads would allow it.I am glad to see that I wasn't the only one who had trouble getting into this one. I'm usually a big fan of the "plain, shy girl gets the guy" plots, but this one never took off for me. Seems like others struggled on and were rewarded once it *finally* got started, but this was a library book with outstanding reserves on it, and my TBR pile is just too high. I was also irked by the heroine's constant "genteel swearing." While that was almost certainly character- and period-appropriate, its over-use was cloying and cutesy in the extreme. I felt like yelling, "Just use a real curse word, dammit, or don't use any at all!" ;-)My other issue was a technical one. I spend all day at work with my eyes glued to, alternately, the printed page and the computer monitor. Which means that my eyes are a little tired at the end of the day (the only time I seem to get for pleasure reading these days). The font, while attractive, was on the small side, and of a shape and lack of contrast which made reading the book even more of a struggle. I'm not having this problem with the other books I've been reading at night, so I suspect it's a book-specific issue. Picky, I know, but it did end up being a factor. less
