Mates
review 1: This book was recommended to me as my first book by this author. I am happy I decided to read it. It was refreshing. It had a lot of aspects I look for in a story, PLUS a different view on shifters. Are there still mates. Yes. There are 'true mates' and just mates. A true mate is two halves(people) who together are whole. Plus, it is rare. But it does happen. I have seen this in different shifter stories, but I felt the author's structure of the wolf pack was good. So we have Zev and Jonah. They are destined Mates. This story is long, but it doesn't feel like it drags on. It takes places over 30 years. Zev and Jonah 'meet' for the first time when they were babies, about one year old. Jonah just doesn't know 'Pup' and Zev are one and the same. They grow up and... more Jonah leaves to go to college to become a doctor(i.e. many years away). Zev is going to take over the pack and become the Alpha. He is always taking over the family business. He can't move away with Jonah(while he is in school), he has to stay and learn the family business and take over the pack. A lot of families are depending on him. He wants to modernize his pack. There are many prejudices and 'truths' that are believed. One is that shifter don't mingle with anyone else but themselves. Zev aims to break that up. Make his pack become more accepting of others. He expands the business massively by traveling and bring in contracts from humans and others. He is known for being a strong and powerful wolf who also runs a great business. It is a known 'fact' that male wolves HAVE TO mate with females. It is called knotting. It helps the males keep in touch of their human side and it helps females release their inner wolf. And here lies the dilemma. Zev's true mate is a Male Human. Needless to say, his family doesn't believe he is gay and worries that he is going to loose his human self if he doesn't tie soon. Usually wolves tie in their second decade.During this whole time, Zev and Jonah have a long distance relationship. It is far from easy. There are questions that need to be answered. I enjoyed the story and will will continue the series.
review 2: I love werewolves. They are cute and fuzzy and adorable. They are also growly and hot and dominant. They can also be sweet and sensitive. Enter Zev, the love of my life during this book. How can you not love a man that basically waited 30 years to finally bond with his true mate??This was everything that a great shifter story should be. I loved Zev, I loved Jonah, and I loved them together. I loved Zev's best friend Toby. I mean, really, it's impossible to not love someone who had such gems in the story as this quote "Look, Zev, I know you'd rather sit on my lap while I'm taking a dump than talk about your feelings, but what's going on with you?" That's some good stuff right there. At the end of this book you meet the unique pairing of Ethan and Miguel. They are actually featured in book 2 so believe me when I say that I couldn't run to read that book fast enough! less
