review 1: In 14 Cows for America there is a village in Kenya, the Maasai trubesmen, that herd about the terrorist attack that happened on September 11, 2001. The Masai tribe count their life on how much cattle they have and that determines their wealth status. Kimeli a village member decided that he wanted to give a cow to America as a sign of blessing and help for America. Kimeli goes to the elders of the tribe and asks to give more cows to America, they decided to give another thirteen cows. They invite the American ambassador to the village. Once he is there they do a secret ceremony and America the the cows. The American ambassador acceptecs the cows and they are treated great and reproduced. The cows were not made into dinner but kept as a great gift and will not be harmed. T... morehe quote “ because there is no nation so powerful it cannot be wounded, nor a people so small they cannot offer mighty comfort.'' This book is different because this is showing another country pulling together and helping America through such a tough time. The illustrations were very vibrant and eye catching. This is a good story for older children once they have understood the concept of what happened to the towers and how they fell. This is a very powerful book and one of my favorites to lean about there is some hope in the world. This book can be used to discuss different cultures in a classroom. Deedy, C., & Naiyomah, W. review 2: 14 Cows for America is the heart warming story of how an african village unites to donate 14 precious cows to an american diplomat as a way to show their compassion for the American people in the aftermath of september 11th. Kimeli Naiyomah, a member of the village who moved to America describes the horrors of 9/11 to the members of his community. In an effort help heal the american people, the villagers decide individually to donate 14 cows- a symbol of life and security to the Americans. Greeting the diplomat in ritual garb and with a ceremony the community presents him with their deeply personal gifts. The award winning story offers a profound example of global community and citizenship at its best. It could be used to teach the importance not just of local culture and community but also challenge young learners to think of themselves as apart of a global community as well. less
