review 1: I loved this heart-warming story about people coming together to help each other. After 9/11, Kimeli Naiyomah returned home to his Maasai village in Kenya to share the news. Upon his return he asks the elders in his village to bless a cow that he worked hard to get for his mother. As Kimeli Naiyomah explains, his tribe taught him that, ”to heal the pain in someone’s heart, you give something that is close to your own heart.” To the nomadic Maasai tribe a cow means, “life”. As a tribe, their hearts broke for America and as a way to show their support and sympathy they give 14 cows to the American diplomat. This tale brings together two worlds and cultures during a time of distress. It shows a global community and togetherness. The illustrations bring to life the K... moreenyan culture and their heart-warming act of friendship and kindness. This is a great book for all children to read, and would be great to use in grades 3-5th when 9/11 comes around.
review 2: Text to text: this book reminded me of many books that are about the tragedy of September 11. I even teared up while reading it and treading the true story behind it.Text to self: I related to this book at first because I LOVE cows. They are my favorite animal. But after reading it I connected it to my feelings about September 11. Text to world: This book obviously relates with any other country finding out about the terrorist attack and the terror it brought. It also shows how communities come together during a tragedy. less
