review 1: I have read all of the Sarah Booth books and this one is by far the best. Carolyn Haines’ writing keeps getting better and better. Her plot lines get more intriguing and there are more twists and turns. I enjoy seeing the growing friendships between Sarah Booth, Cece, Tinkie, Oscar and love-interest Graf [although I am a fan of Coleman and really hope to see him and Sarah Booth together]. Haines also touches on social issues found in the today’s society as a way to develop the plot. The story focuses on the Lady in Red, a mystery woman whose coffin was unearthed. While her body has been well preserved there is no hint as to her true identity. Enter Professor Olive Twist. She wants to prove the identity of this woman and make a name for herself while doing it. AND she ... moreis willing to steamroll over any obstacle that gets in her path, including the truth. Add to this is a bunch of men whose agenda is to return the South to its former glory, through fair means or foul. The destructive nature of long held secrets that are left to fester is a theme throughout the book. The reader gets more back story on Cece and Oscar’s family as well as the tinniest hint of possible things to come. The mere mention of the accident that claimed the lives of Sarah Booth’s parents might open another story line in future Delaney books.
review 2: "Smarty Bones" by Carolyn Haines To begin at the beginning one needs to go into the history beneath Dahlia House. That history lies in the land itself. The land that holds Sarah Booth Delaney's heritage passed down through generations of her family. The land, Dahlia House and the Delaney's have a history that remains intertwined and in Sarah Booth's reality cannot be separated. A woman with evil intentions comes to Zinnia, Mississippi to dig up some dirt. The digging would include the grave of a Lady in Red who had already been interned twice. Who is this Lady in Red and what important part had she played in history that, if unearthed, may evoke such outrage in the town of Zinnia? The woman with these evil intentions is a professor from out of state...Olive Twist. The fact that she is intent on bringing to the forefront a scandal of such magnitude only feeds her desire to proceed no matter what the cost. Once again I entered Dahlia House with Sarah Booth Delaney, Sweetie and Pluto...and let us never forget Jitty. The history of that land, that home and that Delaney family brings us into a reality only found in the Sarah Booth Delaney mystery series. This was one of the best if not the best books in the life of Sarah Booth.BTW...reading between the lines I noticed a mystery to be solved in Sarah Booth's future. That is the mystery of what really happened to cause the death of her parents, Libby & James Franklin, on that open road so many years ago. less
