review 1: Impressive, vivid world-building in an adventure full of pirates, wizards and a magical map. Marrill bumps into a pirate ship one day in her suburban Arizona town and hops aboard. She soon meets Ardent, a kind wizard, Coll, a young seafarer, and Fin, a clever pickpocket that only she can remember. Both Marrill and Fin yearn to find the map that will take them back to their mothers, and along the journey they build a strong friendship. An evil Oracle chases them with apocalyptic plans of his own for the map. Plenty of wacky gadgets, pirats, gossiping trees and frozen wastelands keep the action moving through 400+ pages. Hand this to any middle schooler up for an imaginative wild ride.
review 2: From the second I started reading this book it unfolded in my head a
... morend became so visually stunning that I could picture it perfectly. The characters are endearing, the scenery is breathtaking, and each scene is built to impact the reader's imagination and bring this book to life. I was hooked from page 1 and could not put this book down if my hands would have caught fire. It made me laugh, it made me cry, but most of all, it made me want MORE. This book, though Middle Grade, is a great read for all ages. Carrie and JP knocked it out of the park and I cannot wait to read more from them. If you want a fun, fast-paced fantasy novel filled with pirats (yes, it's spelled wrong, and once you read the book, you will know why), wizards, talking trees, and 2 kids who's friendship makes you believe anything is possible. less
