review 1: I first looked at this book and its cover, and I thought, " Woah, this creepy bronze mask thingy is really really really starting to creep me out" When I actually started to read this book the beginning is totally vague making me just want to close it and leave it to collect dust, but when I continued it's like "What a beautiful wooorld ♪♪♪" actually it isn't though. Their world is dying. hahaI loved the mystery (maybe too mysterious) and how different the world was from ours! I mean, it had like seven moons (Sorry if I'm wrong)!! Plants and animals are also very different, and the city is super awesome, more on the gross side though. The magic is quite cool and because it was the first book, I was very curious and excited at every new thing that kept popping up. Ove... morerall, I would give it a 3.5, BUT it's because it's the first book in the series, and if you keep reading the next books, they just keep getting better and better!! The last book in the series is one of my absolute faves and it is definitely beyond five stars!!
review 2: CHRACATERS: 4 The characters were well described because it provided details to the characters and how they looked like. An example of a description would be of Galen Harn in the beginning, "His face was a mask of flame light and haggard shadows, his deep eyes barely gleaming, his hook nose exaggerated like a hawk's" (Fisher 10). I liked the characters because their personalities varied, for example Galen Harn was a risk taker while Raffi, his assistant, thinks things through and is most of the time afraid. The characters are believable because some people in the world are risk takers who do not care for their safety and there are people who calculate the risks like what Raffi did when he was planning to go across a slippery and broken bridge (Fisher 121). The characters do stay true to them selves because for example Carys still believed in most of the things she leaned from the Watch even though it is wrong and incorrect and a quote that shows that she had not changed her mind is, "The Watch are my mother and father" (Fisher 367). SETTING: 5 The setting is extremely important to the story because it affects the characters and the plot. It affected Carys when she was chasing Galen around because the forest was very thick with shrubbery (Fisher 19). The author does pass time quickly probably because if the author were to explain the story bit by bit it, the book would have been enormous. An example of how the author skipped time is, "It was a long time before they moved" (Fisher 222). The setting affected the story in many ways and one way is when they used the Forest of Karsh to avoid the Watch who were hunting them down. The setting was described by Carys as, "Deep underwater, and as they sailed close to one she saw the hardness of the wood, fossilized" (Fisher 203). I do not believe that the story could not have taken during another period because in the past the world of the book was in peace which had no war and no Bad groups like The Watch. It could have taken in a different place because the whole world was in turmoil since the Order collapsed (Fisher 195). PLOT: 5 the novel was a bit unique mostly because between each chapter there are small texts that give the reader background information about the story and its past mistakes. A quote from a piece of background info was, "The Watch is unsleeping. Never relent in the search; never turn back" (Fisher 107). I predicted the part that Galen Harn would get his magical powers back but I did not expect him to turn into The Crow, which is holy to them and the culture (Fisher 364). The novel was about Galen Harn and Raffi trying to find relics but once they get tricked Galen stars to become more and more depressed since he had lost his powers. They meet Carys later on and she decides to follow them along their trip to find the crow which they hope can help them regain Galen's power back and to call The Makers back to solve the problem in their world called Anara (Fisher).THEME: 4 I think the author's message is that person must not be selfish and try to understand the world around them because it is possible that a person may have lied to you about various things. I thought this was the message because Carys who taught to believe that The Order was fake and that no one had powers and that everything the Watch did was good. A quote that supports this acquisition is, "But I can't wipe that training out. I need to think about things, find out what's true" (Fisher 367). The story was most likely really about how possible it is to make a person think the wrong way by teaching them with lies. I thought this because in the end the part of lying was quite important between the three people, Raffi, Galen and Carys (Fisher 367-372). The title has nothing to do with the theme because all it says is' "Relic Master, The Dark City" and this would most likely represent the main idea and setting of the book (Fisher Front Cover).PERSONAL RESPONSE: I thought the book was overall a great book that I might reread again and probably read the next book in the series. The imagery and the vocab in the novel makes the book so much better. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend because it was a amazing book that I think will attract teens since it is one for teens and fantasy or fiction lovers. less
