review 1: I liked this book much better than the first book in The Relic Master series. Maybe because I was used to the locale and the characters but I think that really I liked the fact that the characters evolve, especially Carys. In book #1 I thought that Carys was a passing character but she returns as one of the main characters in this book. And she's a gutsy female. I also liked that some of the chapters featured what Carys was doing and some what Galen and Raffi were doing. So in this second book, the Keeper Galen and his apprentice Raffi learn that when Tasceron was destroyed and the Masters killed or went into hiding, that the Emperor had a child. It is this child that Galen and Raffi seek in this book and it takes them into the Watch's territory, extreme danger. They also m... moreust rescue this child before the Watch realize who and what she is. That's where Carys comes in. She's a Watcher but is confused. From her earlier association with Galen and Raffi she no longer believes the propaganda taught to the children that the Watch take from their parents in the villages. She is also searching for a clue to her own roots. But can they trust Carys with their secrets, or will she report them to the Watch?
review 2: I liked it more than the first book, even though it was a little slow in spots. I think being familiar with the characters and world helps us get right into the story. I enjoyed the expansion of our understanding of what is wrong with the world and who is behind it, though some of the themes are very familiar. How many fantasy worlds contain a huge building/castle/ruin with secret rooms undiscovered for centuries? This series has one each book so far. How many series have some bad/maybe only slightly curious or crazy guy create warped, hybrid creatures that are mixtures of other creatures?Anyway, fun enough read. I like Carys' sections and character. I'll be finishing the series. less
