review 1: I do enjoy fairy tale retellings and this one sets Snow White in the 19th century West, where Puritan magic is in conflict with Native American magic. It's a fast-paced tale (lots of short chapters with very long titles), and it has all the familiar elements: the beautiful child who matures into a beautiful woman, the wicked stepmother, the magic mirror, Snow White asleep for a century, and more. Intriguing, quirky characters, colorful language, whimsical, and generally exuberant. Julie Whelan reads it wonderfully--first in sweet youthful tones as the young Snow White and then as a jauntier Old West storyteller, drawl and all. Diverting.
review 2: Really enjoyed this reimagining/retelling of the Snow White story. The only aspect I didn't care for was how intens
... moreely symbolic Valente's writing could be. I found myself glossing over some sentences because they were difficult to "unpack" and I was anxious to get on with the story and see what happened. Other than this, I loved how Snow White was reimagined as half Crow Indian, the "dwarves" as other women, and the old American West setting. And no romance! (Prince Charming is a horse!) less

Very very clever - my favourite fiction out of all of this year's nominees.
