review 1: I picked this up because I liked the cover (although I probably shouldn't admit it) and the plot summary looked interesting. It was a little slow getting started, but I soon found myself becoming reallay attached to the narrator and curious about the ending. The characters are interesting and well developed and the plot has enought twists to keep it from being predictable. I'd like to read more from Ms. McPherson.
review 2: A young woman returns to her childhood home after the death of her alcoholic mother, from whom she's been estranged for many years. She learns that during her absence, 10 years earlier, a 3-year-old disappeared while in his grandparents' care. The protagonist, Opal Jones, gets a job assembling home deliveries for a grocery store, and clea... morens up the house. For unexplained reasons, she decides to look into little Craig's disappearance and two other mysteries. The weaving together of the three investigations creates something of a convoluted tale as various of the neighbors come under suspicion. The story is set in a low-income neighborhood in Leeds, England, where for unexplained reasons, people still have outhouses in their back yards even though they have indoor plumbing. The outhouse motif appears throughout the story. McPherson was really good at describing the generally grim and depressing life these people were leading and Craig's disappearance was a fascinating story. However, the two side mysteries just didn't do it for me and the way it all wrapped up was a little too convenient. less
