review 1: 3-3.5 stars...I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I definitely want to mention that I do not know how my copy compares to the version for sale. The amount of typos and mistakes definitely affected my reading experience as there were far too many for an author of Chelsea's caliber. One thing that really worked well for me in this book is the characters. Rory is tough and determined, having earned a top spot in her father's company at a young age. She's also got a bit of a wild side and her internal dialogue is snarky and funny.Lucah is a dreamy businessman trying to work his way up the corporate ladder. I was impressed with his tenaciousness in getting a job as Rory's assistant. They chemistry is really good and definitely steamy! I also liked... more that he had a touch of shyness about him at times. So all of the above, combined with the fact that it was nice to see a woman in the position of power really worked for me. Sadly, there were a few things that didn't work for me. I felt the quality of writing was pretty inconsistent. I'd go several pages with great writing and flow but then find several paragraphs with choppy writing and redundant words/phrases. This is a series and has a sequel but even so, the ending was rushed. After the climax of the book, I was disappointed with the exception of the introduction of Ryder's character. I will likely read the sequel at some point because I did enjoy these characters and Ryder is an intriguing side character. I think this is a sweet story and hopefully the sequel will be a bit more fulfilling.
review 2: Posted on Les Romantiques - Le forum du siteReviewed by FabiolaReview Copy from the PublisherSweet surrendering is the first volume in the Surrendering Saga series which is at this time made of 4 volumes and 3 episodes. The author doesn’t mention so far the last secondary character remaining: Chloe, who’s gay. So it’s possible the series doesn’t end here! Chelsea M. Cameron is an author I didn’t know at all.The story presents Rory, daughter of the founder and CEO of the company, who’s looking for an assistant, and Lucas Blaine, who’s looking for a job. The latter literally forces himself on her: firstly by inviting himself in her office for a job interview without having been invited, then by following her in the bar where she goes with her girlfriends. Our two heroes aren’t able not to fall in love and try to hide their relationship as much as possible. But Lucas has a secret.I liked the synopsis and the reviews were positive so I thought “why not!” When ending my reading, I decided Sweet surrendering would be my first and last try for this author.A lot of negative points to explain this decision:- Chelsea M. Cameron decided to write the rest of Rory and Lucas’ story with the volumes 2 and 4 of the series. I don’t see the point in it at all. I found Sweet surrendering veeeeeeeeeeery long. I love stories were heroes aren’t at each other’s throat during the all novel, or there must be an excellent reason. Here, it’s clearly not the case. By the way our heroes admit very quickly first their attraction then their love. The author tries to keep the reader on tenterhooks with Lucas’ notorious secret, which explains why I also read it right to the end, but it’s so boring at times, full of useless and repetitive details and scenes that I wanted to skim through this book several times. What prevented me from doing it was the fear to miss details important for comprehending the story. So, knowing other books in the series talk about the same characters, I say no way.- the author also decided to use two secondary characters of the book (Marisol Everly and Fin Herald, two friends of the heroine) and tell their story as a serial which is made of so far of three episodes. So frankly, I don’t know what’s wrong with the authors with this new trend, as for me I hate that. I already avoid when I love an author, there it’s sure, for an author whose book I didn’t like, it’s a sufficient reason not to read him or her anymore.- the heroine drinks to her heart’s consent several times. I can be tolerant and accept one binge in a novel. The heroine asks herself why and decides to stop there. But in Sweet surrendering, not only the heroine does it again several times, but what’s more, she blames the others for leading her to do it! I had the feeling it was often a joke but frankly I don’t care. All I see is a young woman supposed to be mature enough who’s spending her nights between girlfriends drinking glass after glass, to the point of being completely drunk and waking up with a hangover. No! A true romance heroine should respect her body and her health more! And too bad if the author thinks I’m preachy, but when I read these scenes, all I think is that the heroine behaves as an idiot and that I wouldn’t like to have young adults read this book.- the insults between girlfriends. The “b..h” and “s..t” when they are best friends, no way, that’s not acceptable for me. Just like alcohol. Can’t “modern” girls talk together decently?- the mistakes scattering the book. I can forgive that because I received a non finalized copy. I hope the author had her novel corrected before publication. If not, that’s too bad! With all this, you’ll ask me if I found positive thinks in this novel? Yes, humor. And the relationship between the heroes who trust each other and whose arguments don’t last for lots of pages. Unfortunately it’s not enough and I have too much to read for wanting to give the author another chance. less
