review 1: This is a book club selection that I read in advance because I spotted it at the library. The title immediately caught my eye because I love the Artemis Fowl books, however in this tale, the name Artemis rightly refers to the female goddess of the moon. It centers around a teenage girl who grew up with a Catholic father and pagan mother. She decides to follow her mother's traditions and takes on the name of Arethusa. Not only does she take on the name but the myth that goes along with it. She feels destined to be with Alpheus as the myth predicts, but her mother's vision of him differs from hers. Without revealing too much of the plot, she ends up shipwrecked on the beautiful Azores islands off Portugal and the tale continues. I would have given the book a higher rating bu... moret I thought the emphasis on mythology was too heavy and that Arethusa was too weak a character throughout most of the book.
review 2: I thought the premise of the book sounded really cool, but after reading a few chapters, I just couldn't get into the story. Not saying it's badly written, but it just held no appeal or the adventure I thought it would have. I did like the moral of the story though, that sometimes our greatest fears and bindings are only what we believe them to be and that freedom comes from releasing their hold and power on us. less

This story confused me, but I also found myself really drawn into it the farther I went.
