review 1: This book is a really interesting story about a boy who gets stranded on Japan. It is about what difficulties he went through when arriving to a totaly foreign place. The plot is very interesting but not so original. It has the same setup as many other books do. With this I mean charackters that basicaly take on the same role as many other charackters do in other books, like for example Harry Potter. This book is very interesting and it is a very interesting how you feel for and understand how hard it must be for Jack to go through all of these difficult things that are different than they are in Japan like for example the etiquet at the table, and losing face (dishonoring yourself). Throughout reading the book I learned allot of new things about the Japanese culture and "... moreThe way of the Warrior". The taught me allot of Japanese words too. In total this was a very interesting and educational book. You should deffinetly read it.
review 2: I appreciated the author's intentionality with regard to introducing his young readers to concepts and concrete examples of the challenges involved in engaging with a culture that is foreign to one's own. Although the main character is able to overcome cultural and linguistic barriers much quicker and conveniently than could be realistically expected in life's journey, the author does communicate progress and increasing understanding over the course of the book and the series. I loved that when the main character first encountered characters from Japan what they said was written in transliterated Japanese so that the young reader would be as clueless as the main character with regard to what the Japanese were communicating. I also greatly appreciate the author's desire to educate his readers with a basic knowledge of Japanese culture and language. A fun and engaging read. less
