review 1: I can see the similarities to Firefly but Chris Wooding ain't no Joss Whedon. He pays homage to his predecessor, mixes in some steam-punk,a bit of Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, let's it all simmer together for 400 pages and presto! Retribution Falls. Except, I think the author forgot to add the necessary ingredient to hold everything together: good writing. The story starts off promisingly enough but soon becomes all too familiar and predictable--a poor rehash of its cultural influences. Although the novel is entertaining for the most part, the writing lacks a certain level of finesse to make this a memorable read. The characters are flat; the world-building poorly developed. Perhaps Chris Wooding intends to expand on these narrative deficiencies with the next books... more in the series but I'm not in any hurry to find out.
review 2: Очень неплохо получилось! Первая книга читается с большим интересом и оторваться совершенно невозможно. Чем-то напоминает заглавную книгу Панова из серии "герметикон". К сожалению, у Панова с каждой новой книгой стало скучнее. Посмотрим, как получится у данного автора. less
