review 1: This book is based on Washington Irving's tale, "Rip Van Winkle". The story was actually quite boring to me but the description of the New York State land at the foot of the Cat Skills (Kaaterskills) Mountains & the life of a woman in 1700s America were well worth reading (reason I love historical fiction). The author's prose is lyrical. And yes, the narrator, the lead, is unlikeable which only leaves the reader with the hint of doubt of her truthfulness & makes the story more intriguing.

A woman left alone on a farm that requires more than one set of hands is at the mercy of the community and her own determination.This story is told with such skill and beauty that the very essence of the Dutch settlement in the Hudson River Valley is brought to life.
