review 1: Wow! Did I just give a horror novel a 5-star rating? Yes, I did, and all 5 stars are well-deserved. This is not just a great horror novel, it is a great novel, period. Superbly crafted, beautifully written, and deliciously scary. It was nice to read something from the horror genre that didn't require me to check my brain before departure. Nor did the story collapse into utterly ambiguous absurdity in its final pages the way so many "scary" stories do. The conclusion of TATR was cohesive, logical, smart and satisfying. While there was a part of me that was sad to turn the last page, the larger part of me felt the word count was absolutely perfect. I must seek out more from this author.
review 2: This creepy, atmospheric tale made perfect reading for rainy, late ... moreOctober nights. For some reason, I had thought I might be turned off by the post World War I time setting...you know, that it might seem old-fashioned and affected. But the author's skill with language and dialogue (which, owing to the time period and location does not match today's, and my own, standards of political correctness) really drew me in. There were at least two...no, make that three...scenes that really gave me the heebie jeebies. less
