review 1: A good friend gave me this book for my birthday and I loved it! It's probably not something I would've chosen for myself, but I'm now a big fan of this author. I love the conversational way he writes, the snarky and witty banter interspersed with foul language—this is all right up my alley. I love how it's part horror and part fantasy with magic and Russian folklore. So inventive and fascinating and very fast-paced! I didn't experience any kind of lull at all. Loved every minute of it.
review 2: This is one of those books that I'd put into the "new generation" of fantasy, both in the sense that it's more self-aware of how it deals with magic, and plays more with how magic works in the modern world. It also has a very literary sensibility, which I imagine can
... morebe somewhat off-putting to more traditional fantasy fan. The characters were all wonderfully realized, and the decision to put such a focus on addiction and recovery gave the story a quite interesting dynamic that underpinned the more traditional plot-of-crisis. less
