review 1: LOVED this book. This book a vampire book but it stayed away from old tropes and worn-out storylines. It added some interesting twists to the mythology of vampires. Overall, it had a very interesting story, lots of action, well-developed characters, and wonderful narration. This is one of those audiobooks where the narration was SO GOOD that I wonder if I would have liked it as much if I listened to it. I particularly liked the character of Margaret and the way the book ended.
review 2: I read a fair amount and I don't think I've ever been as pleasantly surprised, stunned even, by a book as I've been by Lesser Dead. Some backstory...Buehlman came to notice a few years back, his debut was mediocre, his subsequent books abysmal. Seriously, I was incredulous of th... moree fact that he kept getting published, HC, major publisher, the works. I told myself I wouldn't waste any more time on him, but his newest was just sitting at the library, looking at me, with it's striking cover and intriguing premise. So I took it home. And it was good. Really good. His vampires in New York story was exactly what vampire stories ought to be, exactly what New York was back in 1978. Dirty, nasty, dangerous, scary. Buehlman rendered that world vividly, spectacularly even. His narrative was entrancing, with a great visceral quality to it. His characters were a terrifically engaging, amoral or really unconventionally moraled bunch. The narrative actually got too clever sometimes, in a meta sort of way, particularly at the end. I'm not sure I loved the ending, but I definitely appreciated it. So this was all very very impressive, glad I didn't give up on the author, inconsistency aside, this is a serious hit for all the misses. And I don't even like vampire stories, at all, but this was totally worthy it. Recommended. less
