review 1: This story was set in the last part of the 1700's in England. It's the story of a boy who stumbles upon is vocation at a very early age of being an elephant keeper. His father was head groom for horses in a wealthy landowner's estate so he had a natural tendency to be comfortable around livestock. He develops a very deep, personal relationship with the elephants he takes care of to the exclusion of a "normal" life for himself. Life back then was hard for those who care for animals because of the dependency they had for wealthy patrons- just a shaky step above slavery. It was interesting historical fiction.
review 2: Thoroughly enjoyed the book, it was well written and drew me in from the beginning . The relationship between the elephant keeper and the elep
... morehants was developed as any meaningful relationship are. I loved the human nuances developed of them. The only reason I didn't give a five star rating was that last portion of the book..there was something about the mind "meld" was a bit much... I loved the explanation of the elephants, their overall demeanor and connections to their "keeper".A very enjoyable read. less
