review 1: Gah. A steampunk bodice ripper with no steampunk (beside a "mechanical sweeper" and a barely mentioned clockwork dog) nor any real bodice ripping to speak of. If you don't like explicit sex scenes, you will be offended. If you do like them, you will be bored. If you read it for any reason other than the hormones you'll find only flat characters and a rambling story that tries to mash in every supernatural creature ever written about in legends. Caroline is actually a well-written character for the most part, but she's the only saving grace in the entire novel.
review 2: 3.5 stars. This is a cute steampunk romance with a dash of mystery. For most of the story, the romance takes a backseat to the raggle-taggle family formed when Sir Merrick adopts a group of orph... morean children. Focus shifts to the romance quite suddenly, so there's not much buildup or tension. The kids are all adorable, as are most other characters and I enjoyed their antics. It was also obvious that they will be making appearances in future books. less
