review 1: I usually really enjoy CJ Box's writing, but this time I could really FEEL the author's "editorializing" and did not appreciate it. To wit, his rather numerous references to "those using EBT cards" or "receiving government assistance," etc. Once I can understand but after the 2nd time I felt I was being beat over the head with the politics. Folks who have worked HAVE paid into the system and if they need a little help with food stamps (the EBT card) or otherwise, so what?? With the recession going on and hitting people hard, folks being laid off or not able to find jobs what the heck, Mr. Box??? And there ARE some people who are "disabled" and not able to work. Yes, there are those who cheat the system, but don't paint a brush over everybody. That was my only irrita... moretion.
review 2: I find C.J. Box's books good reads. Joe Pickett is a straight laced conservation officer living near Sheridan WY who keeps getting involved in mysteries, deaths, and intrigue while the local sheriff and his team do all they can to keep Joe out of their hair. Joe's mother in law (about 65, good looking, on husband # 5, always trading up) is a central character in this novel because her latest husband is found dead spinning on 1 of many wind turbines on their huge ranch. less
