Cody Hoyt
review 1: Struggling recovering alcoholic Cody Hoyt finds his friend (and recovering alcoholic) Hank Winters dead in a cabin. The death is ruled suicide, but Cody does not believe it. Against authority, Cody goes on a hunt for the killer who he believes is on a mountain trail horseback trip/adventure and among the tourists is his (Cody’s) son. The plot, full of usual twists and turns, turns out to be a bit far-fetched, but fun to read. The characters and mountains are well-drawn. There was an interview with Box at the end of the audio where he mentions he likes to write the characters of teen girls because they are so complicated (he has daughters) and interesting. It shows in his characterization of two teen sisters who are on the horse trip. I also remember him doing a grea... moret job with the two sisters in “The Highway.”
review 2: C.J. Box delivers a wonderful cat and mouse thriller in Back of Beyond. The main character is Cody Hoyt, a recovering alcoholic who is called to scene of an accidental death in a cabin in Montana. Problem is, he knows the cabin and who is inside, his AA sponsor who burned to death. When Hoyt examines the scene he knows its a murder and he is determined to find the killer, if he can stay sober. As clues emerge Hoyt discovers that the killer may have joined a pack tour through the back country of Yellowstone National Park. The same tour his son is on with the man aiming to become his stepfather. Enlisting the aid of an old time Yellowstone pack guide, Hoyt sets off to save his son. But his need for alcohol and nicotine keep him off balanced. As people begin to disappear from the pack tour, the tour organizer becomes concerned and sets off in search of the missing. What he doesn't know is that Hoyt is trailing behind and finding a string of dead bodies. It also seems that the pack tour knows his every move and is finding ways to avoid him. So Cody Hoyt must struggle on to save his son and the innocents in the pack tour. The prose is clean and the story, while starting slowly, soon hums along at a break neck pace. Unlike most thrillers, Box provides some depth to several of the minor characters, especially fourteen year old Gracie Sullivan. The last 1/3 of the book has so many plot twists and turns it makes your head spin and the startling discovery of who is the killer and why will leave you guessing until the last two chapters. Highly recommended for lovers of thrillers and suspense with a side of mystery thrown in. less
