review 1: OK, am I the only reader who felt kinda tricked by this book? Like an element of bait and switch had taken place? The blurb on goodreads and amazon set it up to be a novella about a steamboat captain and the boat's owner having to work together and consequently fall in love. For the first 10 pages or so, that is what I thought I was getting and I was excited about it. The setting of turn of the 20th century Alaska, and the merchants outlook on trade at that time, were new and exciting to me and a very cool place to set a romance novella. I even like that the heroine has a modern outlook, as an empowered female who knows her future is in her own hands, so she is gonna make it work out well. But then, ever so slowly, with a little more on each page, the plot turns to God and ... moremore and more of the book are talking about His role in their personal outlooks and interactions and relationships. The entire plot shifts to being focused on each of their relationships with God and their calling to be Evangelical in their Christianity. Even to the point that the setting and steamboat plot do not matter.Don't get me wrong, that is fine and dandy, but it is by no means what I thought I was getting. Hence my 2 star review to reflect my "it was ok" (read: but not what I wanted) attitude.
review 2: Another enjoyable short story by Collen Coble! I loved the lesson that you can learn from this story. Philip's wife died from Cholera and he became very bitter with God. He doesn't understand how a loving God could take someone he loved away. Philip and Alexandria Peters cross paths and God uses Alexandria to show Philip why God allows trials to happen.A lot of people often say, "If God is such a merciful and loving God then why does He allow "bad things" to happen?". God allows them because they bring us closer to Him. If nothing ever bad happened to us then we wouldn't need God. God can use the good and the bad for His purpose, He can use them to bring glory to Him. If you are going through a very hard trial, I suggest you read God's Word first then read this book :) less
