review 1: This was an ok book. When I first saw it, I thought it would be more of a practical guide to how preachers particularly can benefit from wide reading. There is some practical guidance in the book but it is much more of a guided tour of the reading of one preacher (Plantinga). There were some interesting and insightful passages, and Plantinga certainly models being a widely read preacher. Overall, though, there was something missing from this book that is hard to place. Sometimes it seemed as if even Plantinga was bored with what he was writing. There's a pretty interesting reading list included that would definitely help preachers get out of some well-worn ruts in reading (e.g. C.S. Lewis and LoTR, both of which I love). Other than that, this book is interesting but not es... moresential.
review 2: Read good authors and preach better. Ok, I like that. The book itself is kind of rambly, like the essays of Montaigne. Unlike my experience with that book which I flung across my dorm room in exasperation back in the 70s, this work is less frustrating. Maybe I am more rambling, or do not have to come up with answers for a blue book test. The deal is, we all have to apply this to our own settings. I'd love to go the the Calvin College reading for preacher workshops. Go, read, talk, return. less
