review 1: Meh. Plausible and well-constructed... as always, Cory's grasp of the technology and the way that he accurately weaves it into the story is excellent, but there really weren't any characters I cared about, which makes it difficult to root for them to overcome their adversity. As with most of Cory's stuff, it's heavy on the side of using the story to make a point, such that it makes the story less entertaining as you're taken out of it by the overt social commentary. I'm used to speculative fiction making me think, but usually as it entertains me and as I relate to the characters. Maybe because I'm not much of an MMO player, I didn't have much to relate to, and the poor downtrodden workers rising up for better treatment thing has been done before, and the angle of it taking... more place inside of an online game doesn't add enough novelty to really keep me interested.
review 2: I didn't actually finish this book because I got too bored and frustrated, waiting for something to happen. It felt like there was no plot or storyline in this book. Instead, it was more like a manifesto or a treatise or something. Just a chance for Doctorow to publish all his thoughts on economics and labor. These are valid points and worthy of discussion, but when I read a novel, I want there to be at least a little bit of story. Otherwise, just write a non-fiction book. less
