review 1: Possibly not at all interesting to anyone who does not work directly in manufacturing, but I found this to be a very fascinating analysis of the new production paradigm available to small scale companies thanks to the convergence of technologies such as 3D printing, open source design, and crowd source funding. In previous decades, for an individual or small company to launch and actual product to compete with large established manufacturers was an incredibly daunting task requiring massive capital investment and prerequisite fundraising, often at the cost of equity of the company or leverage on your personal assets. The author goes through multiple case studies of companies which have been able to go to market successfully while avoiding these and other is... moresues.
review 2: A great book showcasing Doctorow's talents for writing near sci-fi. In "Makers," he paints a distinctly melancholy future all the more so because of the likable characters inhabiting his somewhat bleak future. For me it was a mix of existential conflict, the backdrop of subtle societal decline, and the unshakable feeling that Doctorow's fictional world has a distinct possibility of becoming our future reality. I loved reading it the same way I loved watching von Trier's "Melancholia"; good art is good art. less

It's a good book. Feels pretty much like BoingBoing in novel form.
